What Is Nose Cancer?
Information about Nose CancerWhat Is Nose Cancer?
Cancer is the name given to any one of several diseases that result when the process of cell division – by which the tissues normally grow and renew themselves – gets out of control and leads to the development of malignant cells. Malignant cells are the dangerous ones – if left to their own devices they will invade other surrounding cells and in some cases travel through the bloodstream to other areas of the body, leading to ‘secondary’ cancer sites.
Nose cancer occurs when these malignant cells develop within the nose or the nasal cavity – the area behind the nostrils – but also in the sinuses; the small air-filled cavities inside your nose, cheekbones and forehead.
To be clear, nose cancer – also referred to as Nasal and Sinus Cancer is different from Nasopharyngeal cancer which is when cancerous cells grow in the area where the nose and throat meet.
Nose cancer can be difficult to diagnose early, before damage is noticeable and while it is more easily treated, due to its symptoms being commonly apportioned to other causes: a blocked nose or a reduced sense of smell are both common symptoms of a cold or flu, and many people experience a runny nose during cold winter weather or for a variety of other reasons.
If cancer of the nose is caught early it can often be treated successfully using a range of methods, depending on the stage it has reached when it is diagnosed. However if it is left untreated it can cause severe pain and discomfort, facial disfigurement, and can lead to the development of secondary cancers throughout the body.
Cancer is not contagious and is rarely passed on through families, but there a range of factors that can increase the risk of developing nose cancer including smoking and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), but many people develop the disease after being exposed to certain substances as a result of their job or workplace. Inhaling certain types of dust during, or throughout a working life has been linked to the development of nose cancer, and if you or someone you care for has been exposed to these substances and has developed the disease it is likely that you will be eligible to make a claim for compensation.
